Back-to-school season is the perfect time for a fresh start—not just for the kids, but for your home, too! A little organization now can make busy mornings, homework time, and weeknight routines run much more smoothly. Use this checklist to get your home ready before the school-year hustle begins:

Create a School Drop Zone

Designate one spot near the entryway for backpacks, shoes, lunchboxes, and school essentials. Add hooks, baskets, or cubbies so everything has a place—and make it easy for kids to put things away themselves.

Set Up a Family Command Center

Keep schedules, permission slips, school calendars, and important reminders in one central location. A wall calendar, dry-erase board, or simple bulletin board can help keep the whole family on the same page.

Organize the Kitchen

Make mornings easier by creating a designated area for lunch supplies, water bottles, and grab-and-go snacks. Take a quick inventory of your pantry and refrigerator, and clear out anything expired or no longer needed.

Refresh Closets & Dressers

Before adding new school clothes, go through last year's wardrobe. Donate outgrown items, toss anything worn out, and organize what remains so kids can easily find what they need each morning.

Create a Homework Station

Choose a dedicated spot for homework and school projects. Stock it with pencils, paper, scissors, chargers, and other supplies so kids aren't searching the house every time an assignment comes up.

Tackle the Laundry Routine

Back-to-school schedules can mean more laundry. Set up easy-to-follow baskets or hampers and establish a simple routine for sorting, washing, and putting clothes away.

Declutter High-Traffic Areas

Entryways, kitchen counters, and family rooms tend to collect clutter quickly. Spend 15–20 minutes clearing these spaces and creating designated homes for frequently used items.

Make Mornings Easier

Prep as much as possible the night before. Pack backpacks, set out clothes, prepare lunches, and check the next day's schedule before everyone heads to bed.

Start the School Year With a Fresh Slate

You don't need to reorganize your entire home at once. Focus on the areas your family uses most and make small changes that save time every day. A more organized home can mean less morning stress, fewer lost items, and more time for what matters most.
